Are you interested in getting a microneedling treatment? Ever wonder where to start or if this is the right treatment for you?
Don’t worry, in this article, I will make it clear why everyone should consider trying a microneedling treatment but first you must know it is always best to get a free consultation done in a medical setting to ensure this is the right treatment for you, that the treatment is done safely, and you get the results you were looking for! I emphasize this point because non-FDA-approved devices can be harmful if not done under the supervision of a medical provider.
Why do you Need Microneedling?
As a Licensed Medical Aesthetician, I get this question all the time from my patients. The majority of my patients come in wanting dermal fillers and it is my job to educate them on why they must prioritize skin health before undertaking the filler journey!
My patients have found a higher satisfaction rate when addressing the skin foundation prior to getting dermal fillers. I know there are plenty of treatments to address your skin concerns, but an FDA-approved, medical-grade microneedling treatment coupled with a skincare routine has consistently provided optimal results for my patients.
How Does Microneedling Work?
To fully understand the benefits of Microneedling, we must understand the three phases of wound healing. This is important because, at the core, Microneedling treatments help remodel the skin by creating microchannels with tiny little needles on the skin penetrating down to the dermis that helps resurface the skin by producing new collagen and thicker tissue to the skin.
Many devices in the market can be used for Microneedling treatments that give varying results. We strongly encourage using an FDA-approved device that is safe for all skin types. Having that FDA-approved stamp means the manufacturers of these devices have run numerous tests and trials to ensure the safety of the equipment.
Looks Painful Right? Does it hurt?
Due to the controlled micro-injuries, this procedure can sometimes feel uncomfortable. Don’t worry, if this treatment is done in a medical setting, a numbing cream will be applied to minimize the discomfort to ensure you have a pleasant experience. I tell my patients that they will not feel the needles, you will feel more of a vibration sensation from the device and you might feel it a little more around the boney areas.
Am I a Good Candidate?
The best way to answer this question is by scheduling an appointment with a medical professional and getting a consultation. I start by taking a full medical history of my patients to determine if there are any contraindications we need to identify. These would be any medical procedures that could prevent you from getting this treatment.
How Long Does the Procedure Take?
If you are a new patient, we reserve a full hour to conduct a consultation to see if this is the right treatment for you based on your concerns. Once we layout a treatment plan, the actual procedure may take up to 30 minutes. However, my patients like to add on additional services to boost their results such as PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) or a Signature HydraFacial which could expand the treatment time.
What is the Downtime?
Right after your treatment, it’s completely normal to experience mild to moderate redness. Additionally, your skin may feel warmer, tighter, and super dry. It’s very important to ask your medical provider about post-care recovery products that meet your specific needs to help reduce any discomfort following this treatment. Common products include a gentle cleanser, a peptide serum, a gentle moisturizer, and sunscreen.
Avoid any products that have “ACTIVE” ingredients such as retinol, AHA’s, BHA’S, and exfoliants immediately following the treatment. Also, make sure you are not exercising, using makeup, or doing any activities that result in excessive sweating for the first 48-72 hours. Downtime is typically 2 weeks when bundled with recovery products.
Tell me about the Results!
In my experience, you can expect optimal results at the two-week mark, day 14. You will notice an improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smoother textured skin, and brighter firmer skin!
We recommend a series of 3 sessions scheduled 4-6 weeks apart to get long-lasting results. After you complete your series, you can maintain your results by coming in once a year. My patients that have tried microneedling, love the results and return for touch up sooner than a year. Below are some photos! All of these patients went through three sessions of Skin Pen Microneedling with a take-home recovery kit!
