Sometimes, it is hard to avoid them. And they make your day worse when they pop up suddenly just when you have a special event. Acne can be so bad, but if you know what it is, and how to treat it, things will be much easier.
What is acne?
Acne occurs when the hair follicles (pores) are clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Certain hormones cause extra production of oil. In addition, some medications and certain diet (that is rich in carbohydrates) also contribute to the production of acne.
If the follicle wall is bulged, this will form a whitehead. On the other hand, if the plug is open to the surface it may darken resulting in blackhead.
If you have a serious acne problem, it is better for you to ask your dermatologist to diagnose your situation, and suggest the best prescription medication for you. Using over the counter topical treatment may decrease the production of oil, but it is always recommended to ask a doctor for the best results. To prevent the formation of pimples, you should follow a healthy lifestyle. This will not only help heal pimples, it can also reduce the appearance of future ones.
Healthy lifestyle for controlling acne occurrence:
1. Use gentle cleanser for washing your face. Harsh chemicals and facial scrubs may make acne worse. Wash acne-prone skin only twice a day, since too much washing can irritate your skin.
2. Avoid oily cosmetics. Excess oil in cosmetics may increase the appearance of acne, so you should look for products labeled “water-based”
3. Don’t squeeze pimples. I know this may be difficult to do, but you have to avoid that since squeezing can cause infection or scarring.
4. Remove makeup before going to bed. Going to bed with your makeup on will clog your pores causing more pimples to appear. Also, you should regularly clean your cosmetics brushes with mild soap and water. (Watch this video for how to remove your makeup)
I always like to use home remedies for acne, so if you have mild acne situation, you might want to try some of these home remedies recommended by professional doctors.
Dr Oz suggests some easy and delicious home remedies for acne, here is one of those acne remedies:
Chocolate Home Remedy for Acne:
This recipe contains omega-3s from the walnuts, which are essential for your skin health; also contain whole bran that can help reduce the appearance and instances of blemishes.

According to Dr Drew Ordon ( from the famous The Doctors TV Show) he states his prevention tips for acne as follows:
1. Cleanse regularly
2. Exfoliate
3. Use salicylic acid
4. Use benzoyl peroxide
Dr Ordon also suggests the following two home remedies for acne:
Pumpkin Home Remedy for Acne.
Ingredients:
200 grams of pumpkin pulp
1 tablespoon of non-fat sour cream
Directions: mix ingredients and apply it to your face. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then rinse with cool water. This will cleanse your face, open up your pores; helping reduce pimples and give your skin a glow!
Chamomile Tea Home Remedy for Acne

Hi Dima,
Those are great sounding recipes. I really like the chocolate, walnut and whole grain cereal. Is there a particular whole grain cereal to use? Do you think oatmeal would work and how long should you leave it on your skin?
It also sounds really delicious! I’m almost thinking of melting the chocolate, stirring in a whole grain cereal and walnuts and making little candy bars 🙂 Thank you for the tips.
Dima Al Mahsiri
Hi Marry,
Oatmeal is great too for fighting acne, you may leave on for about 20 minutes.
Using those ingredients for making candy bars sounds a good idea, enjoy that taste and the natural treatment !

Rosemary
Hello,
I found this site real informative.
Fortunately, am conversant with the above remedies for some time.
The breakout comes and goes so I noticed I feel real good when I bathe with warm water.
In fact, I enjoy it warmer and warmer.
My question is: Does washing the face and bathing with hot water (not boiled water but quite HOT) have any adverse effect on the skin?
Dima Al Mahsiri
Hi Rosemary,
Thank you!
Warm water can be good for relaxing stressed muscles, for opening the pores and washing away excess oils from your skin. But you should limit those hot showers.Hot water dries out the skin very quickly and any oil that is in the skin will be washed away. When a lot of hot showers are taken for a long period of time, wrinkles can form because the skin becomes very dry.
